SUMMARY:Webinar: "How long reads are revolutionizing Plant Genomics"
DESCRIPTION:The first webinar of the NGS-CN webinar series is held by Björn Usadel from HHU Düsseldorf on the topic “How long reads are revolutionizing Plant Genomics”. To register to this webinar write an email to our officer Dr. Melanie Sapp: melanie.sapp@hhu.de\n \nBjörn Usadell short bio\nBjörn Usadel studied Biochemistry at the Free University Berlin and conducted his MSc research on Drosophila at the Rockefeller University.  Upon returning to Germany in 2001\, he conducted his PhD studies in the lab of Dr. Markus Pauly at the Max Planck Institute of Molecular Plant Physiology\, Potsdam on identifying and characterizing novel cell wall genes using bioinformatics approaches. \nAfter a postdoc and group leader position with Prof Mark Stitt at the same institute\, he became full professor and director at RWTH Aachen University and the Forschungszentrum Center Jülich in 2011. Ín 2020 he moved to a joined position as Professor for Biological Data Science at Heinrich Heine University and Head of the Institute of Bioinformatics at Forschungszentrum Jülich. He has co-authored more than 150 publications and is an ISI highly cited researcher in Plant and Animal Sciences.

SUMMARY:Annual Meeting of the AGD 2020
DESCRIPTION:**Please note the update: the meeting will be online only**\nOn December 17-18\, 2020\, the annual meeting of the Arbeitsgemeinschaft für Gen-Diagnostik e. V. (AGD) will take place in Bonn. This year everything is different because of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic\, and this is reflected in the meeting program as well as in special organization measures. For example\, a rapid antigen tests will be provided by mail to all participants that register for the meeting to reduce the risk of infection further. The meeting is composed of four sessions:\nSession 1 — The Power of Genomics in the COVID-19 Combat\nSession 2 — Polygenic Risk Scores (PRS)\nSession 3 — New Disease Mechanisms\nSession 4 — Genome Diagnostics and Health Data Security \nFor more information and registration (early bird registration until December 1\, 2020)\, please go to the AGD website: http://www.agdev.de/aktuelle_jahrestagung.html

SUMMARY:Webinar workshop: Introduction to protocols.io and the art of writing protocols
DESCRIPTION:Research papers and protocol organization in private labs and companies often lack detailed instructions for repeating experiments. protocols.io is an open access platform for scientists to create step-by-step\, interactive and dynamic protocols that can be run on mobile or web. Researchers can share protocols with lab mates\, collaborators\, the scientific community or make them public\, with ease and efficiency. Real time communication and interaction keep protocols up to date with versioning\, forking\, Q&A\, and troubleshooting. Public protocols receive a DOI and allow open communication with authors and researchers to encourage efficient experimentation and reproducibility. \nThe first part of this workshop will give an introduction to protocols.io. You will learn more about protocols.io’s mission\, how to discover public protocols\, create your own protocols\, share methods with others\, and how to publish protocols. The second part of this workshop will cover “The Art of Writing Protocols”. You will receive practical tips on how you can make your methods more reproducible and you will be equipped with a list of best practices for writing protocols at the end of the workshop. \nPractical information \nThe workshop takes place after the WGGC2020 News&Views meeting in Bonn. Lenny Teytelman (CEO) and Anita Bröllochs (Head of Outreach) from protocols.io will conduct this webinar from Berkeley\, CA\, USA. It will be possible to attend from an organized conference room at the DZNE which will allow to take part in the group exercise proposed during the webinars\, but also anyone can join from anywhere through the ZOOM platform. \nRegistration \nFill out the registration form\, specifying if you wish to attend the seminar or join from somewhere else. In both cases you will receive the link to the webinar by email few days before the workshop.

SUMMARY:Workshop "Computational Genetics\, and Application in Variant Interpretation"
DESCRIPTION:On behalf of the Cologne Center for Genomics (CCG) in the context of the West German Genome Center\, the Lal Research Group is hosting a three-day coding workshop (December 19th-21st 2019) on “Computational Genetics\, and Application in Variant Interpretation”. \nCosts: Attendance to the workshop is free. \nVenue: The workshop will take place at CMMC large seminar room. \nMentors: Computational biologists from: i) University of Cologne\, Germany; ii) Cleveland Clinic/Case Western\, USA; iii) Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard\, USA; iv) University of Luxembourg\, Luxembourg. \nTarget audience: Graduate students\, postdoctoral scholars\, clinical scientists\, and principal investigators currently working with clinical genetic data\, or about to embark on projects that require analysis of such data. \nPrerequisites: All participants are expected to bring a laptop to the workshop (more details later) For Module 1 no prior programming experience is required. For Module 2 attendance at Module 1 or basic familiarity with R are required. \nHow to apply: Due to space constraints\, we can only accept a limited number of participants. In previous years we were 200-300% overbooked. Please send a short (~quarter page) personal statement/essay about why you want to participate\, which module(s) you want to join and to which degree you fulfill the workshop prerequisites to lald@ccf.org or dlal@broadinstitute.org \nMore information\nhttp://portal.ccg.uni-koeln.de/ccg/assets/templates/doc/seminar/Winter%20Course%20Genetics%20at%20Cologne-2019.pdf

SUMMARY:Snakemake Tutorial Essen 2019
DESCRIPTION:OrganizerDaniela Beisser \nPresenter\nJohannes Köster\, lead developer of Snakemake\, founder of the Bioconda project \nDate and Time\nAug 29\, 9am-5pm \nLocation\nRoom S03 S03 A05 (bioinformatics computer pool)\, University of Duisburg-Essen\, Campus Essen \nThe Snakemake workflow management system is a tool to create reproducible and scalable data analyses. Workflows are described via a human readable\, Python based language. They can be seamlessly scaled to server\, cluster\, grid and cloud environments\, without the need to modify the workflow definition. Finally\, Snakemake workflows can entail a description of required software\, which will be automatically deployed to any execution environment. With over 150k downloads on Bioconda\, Snakemake is a widely used and accepted standard for reproducible data science that has powered numerous high impact publications.
