The West German Genome Center (WGGC)

The West German Genome Center (WGGC) is a network of cooperating members joining forces and expertise to advance the rapidly evolving field of Next Generation Sequencing (NGS). NGS will be a key technology in the future life and medical sciences, and in 2017 the DFG launched the national NGS Competence Center (NGS-CC) initiative with the aim of modernizing and harmonizing NGS infrastructures of German universities. With funding granted in March 2018, the WGGC started its activities officially on January 1st, 2019.

The WGGC founding partners, hosting also the core facilities and production sites, are the Universities of Bonn, Cologne, and Düsseldorf. Three collaborating partners provide additional and complementary expertise: the Universities of Aachen, Duisburg/Essen, and Saarland. Finally, the WGGC also profits from the expertise in pharmacogenomics and genome medicine at the BfArm (the Federal Institute for Drugs and Medical Devices, Bonn), and can count on the Max Planck Institute for Plant Breeding (MPIPZ, Cologne) and on the German Centre for Neurodegenerative Diseases (DZNE, Bonn) for overflow management.
