These ecosystems are declining globally, with predictions of catastrophic coral reef loss due to human activity becoming real. Climate change raises sea temperatures, causing coral bleaching and threatening reef ecosystems. Stony corals, which form the reef’s framework, have a symbiotic relationship with microalgae and other microbes, forming a coral holobiont. We use heat stress tests (CBASS system) across various reefs to identify thermally tolerant corals and analyze their molecular responses. By studying gene expression in coral hosts, algal symbionts, and microbial genes, we aim to guide coral conservation efforts.
